President's Letter
I am so excited that fall is here! Without a doubt, this is my favorite time of
year.
I have been busy changing my home interior to reflect my
love for all things fall. I love
incorporating the color orange into my home, my wardrobe, my paintings and even
my food selections. Orange is such a
warm and inviting color.
I truly hope that you enjoyed Pam Wenger’s portrait
demonstration at our last Members Meeting on October 11th. When her demonstration is released on
You-Tube it will be up for 30 days. I
hope you will take our challenge and see if you can paint a portrait similar to
what Pam showed us in her demonstration.
You will have a sketch to work with and all you need to do is enjoy the
process. When you have completed your
portrait, please do not hesitate to submit it for one of our Zoom Art Salons. We would love to see what you learned, and
Pam Wenger would enjoy it also.
As we prepare for our Holiday Party on December 5th
at Seelos Hall, please make sure to go online and RSVP prior to our
deadline. This will allow us get a good
headcount in order to provide some tasty treats for everyone to enjoy. We also hope you will take our Art Salon
challenge, and bring a special painting for our Holiday gala. (Read details below in this newsletter
regarding the Holiday Party.)
I apologize for this brief newsletter, but unfortunately, I
have caught the flu and am paying the price.
I do look forward to seeing you all on November 8th for our
Members Meeting on Zoom. I will
enjoy introducing you to Shannon Kelly, one of our AWC members and
a watercolor teacher in Atlanta.

Shannon Kelly is an Atlanta-based watercolor artist with a hyper-realistic style. She has worked as a public school teacher for 12 years before taking the leap into teaching and making art for a living.
She finds joy in painting people and animals and is drawn to exploring how nature infringes into the developed spaces in Atlanta. Through her art, she strives to capture flashes of wonder -- that quiet moment when one witnesses astonishing beauty and feels "rooted in the now." Shannon is currently an Artist In Residence at Arts Beacon in the Grant Park neighborhood of Atlana, where she teaches watercolor classes to teens and adults. Our “Brushstrokes” exhibit will be at the Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church in Severna Park for a few more days, till November 6. If you haven’t had the opportunity to go see it, I encourage you to do so. It’s a lovely exhibit in a beautiful, uplifting gallery setting. Thanks to those of you who were able to come to the casual Meet and Greet on October 8. The members of the congregation enjoyed talking with the artists.
If you have paintings on display in the gallery, please come and pick them up on the morning of Monday, November 6 between 9:00 and 10:00. Please arrive no later than 10:00 as the next exhibit is to be installed that same day. The address is 611 Baltimore Annapolis Boulevard, Severna Park.
Our final exhibit of the year will be a return to the gallery at Ginger Cove. The dates for this exhibit are Saturday, November 25 through Friday, January 12, 2024. The AWC website is open for entries now and the deadline for entering is November 6 (same day as pick up at Woods Church). There is a $10.00 per person entry fee. There will be room for two paintings per artist. There is no reception or commission, and sales are arranged between the buyer and artist.
Please deliver paintings on Saturday, November 25 between 9:00 and 10:00. Please keep in mind that this is during Thanksgiving weekend so you might need to make arrangements with a friend to deliver for you. Pick up will be on Friday, January 12, between 9:00 and 11:00. While Ginger Cove is a private residence, visitors are always welcome to stop in to enjoy the exhibit. Just stop at the front desk and ask the attendant to direct you or your guests to the gallery. The address is 4000 River Crescent Drive, Annapolis.

Details: Join us for the Annapolis Watercolor Club's annual Holiday Party Luncheon. There will be decorations, a white elephant gift exchange, live piano music, and a holiday themed Art Salon. There will also be a catered lunch to include: petite sandwiches, charcuterie boards, and crudite platters.
What to Bring: Your favorite dessert to share, a holiday themed painting for the Art Salon, and a white elephant gift.
Charity Donation: Each year the AWC gives to a local charity. This year we are giving to a charity affiliated with St. Mary's Church in Annapolis: Our Lady of Guadalupe Ministry. For some years, the ministry has supported the needy local Hispanic population, and immigrants from other countries. You are encouraged to bring a wrapped art gift to our holiday party for children or young adults. Art feeds the soul …
My deep dive into watercolor began in 2018 after retiring as a school teacher. Although I have never attended art school, I can’t really say that I’m self-taught because I am learning from so many wonderful artists who have become teachers and mentors both in person and online. Some of my favorites are Thomas Schaller, Joseph Zbukvic, Ann Blockley, Chen Chung Wei and Jasmine Huang, and I have a special place in my heart for the artists I have the privilege of painting with up front and personal who have become good friends and mentors over the last few years.
I also love to paint outdoors with my husband, Mike, and am very grateful for the Annapolis Watercolor Club and the many opportunities that they offer that are helping me to learn and grow as an artist. |

In addition to membership with AWC, I am a juried member of the Working Artists Forum in Easton, MD, an associate member of the Baltimore Watercolor Society, a member of the Kent Island Federation of Arts (KIFA), and frequently paint with some wonderful people known as the West River Artists.
My first solo exhibit was in the Garden Gallery at Quiet Waters last year, and I was surprised and humbled to receive honorable mentions in two recent shows at KIFA. If you are interested in seeing more of my paintings I invite you to visit watercolorsbypamelachase.com. |

MEMBERSHIP
Where do our members come from? Since we started presenting our membership meetings on Zoom in 2020, we have been able to invite widely-known demonstrators with no geographical restrictions, and our membership has grown significantly. We have also gained members from outside the local area. For several years prior to 2020, membership was averaging around 150 members. It is now just over 200. We have members from 11 states including the District of Columbia, and one member from the United Kingdom (admittedly, recently relocated there from Annapolis). Within Maryland, 12 counties plus Baltimore City are represented. At the same time, we retain a local identity. A full two-thirds of our membership is from Anne Arundel county, and in fact, one-third have an Annapolis zip code. We plan to continue presenting most of our meetings on Zoom, with in-person meetings once a quarter. We plan to record the in-person demonstrations to make them available to those who are unable to attend, and we hope our membership will continue to expand both locally and afar. Liz Grimes
